Tension Mounts in Kano as Police Allegedly Barricade Emir Sanusi II’s Palace

Emir Sanusi

Kano is on edge as reports emerge of police barricading the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, restricting his movement and preventing him from attending a significant royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area.

The event, scheduled to feature the presentation of a staff of office to the new District Head of Bichi, took a dramatic turn when heavily armed security personnel, including armored personnel carriers (APCs), reportedly sealed off the palace entrance.

A source within the Kano Emirate disclosed that the Emir was ready to depart for the ceremony when security operatives arrived unexpectedly and ordered him to stay indoors. “The Emir has been making calls, trying to understand the situation,” the source added.

Efforts by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to mediate the situation also faced resistance. His delegation, sent to meet the Emir, was reportedly denied entry at the barricade. A government insider stated, “The Governor’s representatives were blocked and unable to gain access to the palace.”

Similarly, the venue for the Bichi ceremony was reportedly cordoned off by security forces, leaving both attendees and organizers stranded. The developments have fueled widespread speculation about the motives behind these actions, with many pointing to potential political undercurrents.

When contacted, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, declined to comment, stating, “I cannot comment on the matter at this time.”

Neither the Kano State Government nor the Emirate Council has issued an official statement, leaving many unanswered questions.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
